Additional Learning Needs
Additional Learning Needs at Ysgol Bryn Alyn
At Ysgol Bryn Alyn, we are committed to ensuring that every learner achieves their full potential. We recognise that some children and young people may require additional support to overcome barriers to learning and to fully access education. Our approach is rooted in the principles of the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018 and the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Code for Wales, placing the learner and their family at the centre of all decisions.
We believe that all learners have the right to be included, valued and supported within a nurturing environment where they can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. We work closely with pupils, families, staff, the Local Authority and external agencies to provide high-quality, person-centred support that enables every young person to succeed.

Additional Learning Needs Provision at Ysgol Bryn Alyn
Our ALN provision is designed to meet a wide range of needs through a graduated and personalised approach. Support may be provided within mainstream classrooms, through targeted interventions, specialist provision or through one of our dedicated centres.
Our aim is always to enable learners to develop the skills, confidence and independence they need to succeed both in school and beyond.

Our Principles
At Ysgol Bryn Alyn we strive to:
Place the views, wishes and aspirations of learners and families at the heart of decision-making.
Identify needs early and provide support promptly.
Promote inclusion and access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
Develop independence, resilience and confidence.
Work collaboratively with parents, carers and external professionals.
Prepare learners for adulthood, employment and lifelong learning.
Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) Resource Provision
Ysgol Bryn Alyn hosts a Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) Resource Provision, which is funded and managed by Wrexham Local Authority.
The provision supports learners whose needs require a highly specialised approach whilst remaining an integral part of the school community. Pupils benefit from personalised learning programmes, smaller group teaching and specialist support designed to help them access education successfully and develop key life skills.
Mainstream Teaching Assistants supporting within the MLD Resource include:
Maureen Hayes
Rachel Corbett
The Achievement Centre

The Achievement Centre provides a highly supportive and nurturing environment for learners who may find accessing a full mainstream timetable challenging.
Many pupils within the Achievement Centre benefit from a quieter, more structured learning environment where staff can provide individualised support to meet their academic, social and emotional needs.
The centre operates very much as a "school within a school", offering:
Small group teaching
Personalised learning programmes
Emotional and wellbeing support
Social skills development
Life skills education
Opportunities to build confidence and independence

Learners can access a range of vocational and practical learning experiences including:
Gardening
Cooking
Enterprise activities
Independent living skills

The centre also includes a sensory room and dedicated games area, providing opportunities for regulation, wellbeing support and social interaction.
These experiences help pupils develop essential employability, communication and life skills to prepare them for adulthood, the world of work and life beyond Ysgol Bryn Alyn.

Learners can study:
English

Science
at a level suited to their individual stage of learning and are supported onto qualification pathways that best match their strengths, aspirations and future goals.

Literacy Support
Sharon Roberts
Higher Level Teaching Assistant (Literacy)
In addition to her role within the REACH Centre, Sharon provides targeted literacy support for learners across the mainstream school. Through personalised intervention programmes, small-group work and in-class support, Sharon helps pupils develop the literacy skills needed to access the curriculum confidently and independently.
Support may focus on:
Reading fluency and comprehension
Vocabulary development
Spelling and phonics
Writing skills and organisation
Exam literacy and revision strategies
Building confidence in communication and learning
Interventions are carefully tailored to meet individual needs and are designed to help learners make sustained progress both in their lessons and in their wider educational journey.
At Ysgol Bryn Alyn, we recognise that strong literacy skills are essential for success across all areas of learning. Through early intervention and targeted support, we aim to ensure that every learner can access the curriculum, communicate effectively and achieve their full potential.
Numeracy Support
Ian Evans
Higher Level Teaching Assistant (Numeracy)
Ian provides targeted numeracy intervention and support to help learners develop confidence, fluency and independence in mathematics. Support is tailored to individual needs and focuses on helping pupils apply mathematical skills both within school and in everyday life.
Working Together with Families
Successful support for learners depends on strong partnerships between school and home.
We value the contribution of parents and carers and work closely with families throughout the process of identifying needs, planning support and reviewing progress. Regular communication ensures that we can work together to achieve the very best outcomes for every learner.
If you have concerns about your child's progress, wellbeing or learning needs, please contact the ALN Team who will be happy to discuss the support available.
