At Ysgol Bryn Alyn, the English Faculty is passionate about developing confident, ambitious

and creative communicators who are equipped to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Through the study of language, literature, media and communication, learners develop the

skills to question, analyse, create and express themselves with confidence. Our curriculum is

fully aligned with the Curriculum for Wales and supports the development of the four

purposes by encouraging pupils to become:

  • Ambitious, capable learners who enjoy reading and exploring challenging ideas.

  • Enterprising, creative contributors who communicate effectively in a range of forms

  • and contexts.

  • Ethical, informed citizens who engage critically with diverse voices, perspectives and

  • issues.

  • Healthy, confident individuals who use language to express themselves and connect

  • with others.

Literacy lies at the heart of everything we do. In line with Estyn's recommendations for

developing literacy across the curriculum, we provide rich opportunities for learners to read

widely, write for a range of audiences and purposes, speak with confidence and listen

critically. Through engaging texts and authentic learning experiences, pupils develop the

literacy skills needed for success in school, employment and life.

Curriculum Journey

Years 7-9: Building Strong Foundations

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum has been designed around the principles of the Curriculum for

Wales, developing learners' knowledge, skills and understanding through a rich and diverse

range of texts.

Learners develop their ability to:

  • Read fluently, independently and critically.

  • Write creatively, analytically and persuasively.

  • Speak confidently in a range of contexts.

  • Listen actively and respond thoughtfully.

  • Evaluate information and viewpoints.

  • Apply digital literacy skills effectively.

Students encounter Welsh, British and international voices, helping them to develop

cultural understanding, empathy and a deeper appreciation of language and literature.

Years 10-11: Preparing for Qualifications and Future Success

At Key Stage 4, learners build upon the foundations established in Years 7-9 through the

study of GCSE English Language and Literature (Combined).

The course enables pupils to develop sophisticated reading, writing, speaking and analytical

skills through the study of a diverse range of literary and non-fiction texts. Learners refine

their ability to communicate effectively, think critically and express informed viewpoints

while preparing for success in further education, employment and lifelong learning.

Theatre Visits

Students have the opportunity to attend professional theatre productions linked to

curriculum texts and wider literary experiences. These visits allow pupils to experience

literature beyond the classroom while developing their understanding of performance,

character and storytelling.

Author Workshops

We are proud to work with talented authors who inspire our learners through workshops,

masterclasses and creative writing events, including:

  • Samantha Maxwell

  • Natasha Borton

  • Patience Agbabi

These sessions provide pupils with valuable insight into the writing process and encourage

them to view themselves as writers, readers and storytellers.
