What is Period Poverty?

Period poverty refers to being unable to afford or access period products, menstrual health education, washing facilities or support. For many young people, period poverty can affect attendance, wellbeing, confidence and educational outcomes.

Research and feedback across Wales have shown that periods can create barriers to participation in education and wider school life. This is why the Welsh Government has made tackling period poverty a national priority through its Period Dignity programme. The Welsh Government provides funding to ensure free period products are available in every school and college in Wales, alongside hundreds of community venues.

Period Dignity in Wales

Wales has been a leader in addressing period poverty and promoting period dignity. The Welsh Government's Period Proud Wales Action Plan aims to ensure that everyone who needs period products can access them free of charge and without embarrassment or stigma. Funding supports schools, colleges and community organisations across Wales to provide products and menstrual health support.

The Welsh Government has stated its ambition that no one should miss education, work, sport or social activities because they cannot afford or access period products. Free products are now available in every school and college in Wales as part of this commitment.

Supporting Wellbeing

Periods are a normal part of life, and we are committed to creating an environment where students feel comfortable seeking support and discussing menstrual health without fear of embarrassment.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Providing free and easy access to products

  • Reducing stigma around periods

  • Promoting menstrual health education

  • Supporting student wellbeing

  • Ensuring no learner's education is disrupted because of their period

We encourage students to speak to a member of staff if they require additional support or have concerns relating to menstrual health.

Need Support?

If you require period products or would like to discuss any concerns relating to periods, please speak to a member of staff in the Pastoral Hub, Attendance Office or Front Office.

At Ysgol Bryn Alyn, we are committed to ensuring that every learner feels supported, respected and able to participate fully in school life.

Periods should never be a barrier to learning.
